How long does it take to recover from a root canal?

Going through the experience of a root canal is not as scary as it sounds.  In fact, it is the pathway to get you out of excruciating pain and back to feeling normal again.Tooth pain can creep up when you least expect it. For me, it started off as a slight feeling of inflammation and redness in one specific tooth, that quickly evolved into an irritating pain that I wanted to get rid of. Unfortunately for me, my issue started on a Friday, and by the middle of the weekend, I was so uncomfortable that I could hardly stand it.

I knew I had to get into the dentist on Monday first thing. I spent the weekend with a very sore mouth, but knowing I would be seen by my dental team soon put me at ease. At my appointment I was told that the tooth was decayed to the point that I needed a root canal on it. No more fillings on that tooth, that would not solve the problem! I needed a root canal, a build up, and a crown to save my painful tooth.I had never needed any major dental work in the past, so this surprised me. However, I had just had a baby, and my dentist explained to me that pregnancy caused so many hormonal changes in my body, that it was common for the mouth to also be affected with decay.

I was as nervous for my root canal, as I was for having a baby. I know this may sound silly, but I know there are some of you out there that feel the same kind of anxiety. However, the dental team put me at ease, and they were so calming and sensitive to my anxiety. They set me up with my favorite show on the tv screen above the dental chair. So, it was actually very relaxing and fun to be able to take a break and watch TV in the middle of the day, when I should be working !

I just focused on the show, and not the procedure, and before I knew it, they had cleaned out all of the contents inside the tooth that were making me miserable. My sweet dental assistant began taking impressions for my new crown, and I was on my way back to a pain free mouth. It took a couple of days to feel completely back to normal. The dental team informed me that it takes just a few days to feel better, but it varies from person to person.
After my experience, my impression of the root canal procedure has changed. It was a lot easier than I expected, you just have to focus on something else rather than the procedure, and make sure that you are in the frame of mind that you are taking the steps to getting pain free again.
